Karner Blue Butterflies

Lupine, on which Karner Blue caterpillars feed

Karner Blue Butterflies are on the federal Endangered Species List and are threatened in Michigan. The WhalonLab has been participating in the conservation of this species, by partnering with the DNR to track the species, location and number, and their habitat. This is accomplished through marking locations found in the woods with GPS locations every summer. Habitats are revisited multiple times to look for both butterflies and caterpillars.
